King County Elections only provides 10 permanent ballot drop boxes for a population over 2 million. If we want our democracy to grow and thrive, we must diversify and expand our options to return a ballot. Pierce County provides three times as many ballot boxes for a population less than half of King. Spokane County partners with its local libraries. There are better options to increase voting accessibility. We must do better in King County.
Making it as easy as possible to vote is critical, we should ensure that every voice is included. However King County Elections is providing only 10 permanent ballot drop boxes for a population over 2 million. Moving to an all vote by mail system has made voting more convenient despite the ‘hassle tax’ of a stamp. But for those who aren’t able to vote until the day of the election, or for those voters under the age of 30 who simply don’t have a relationship with the post office, we should diversify and expand options for returning a ballot. This starts with vastly expanding our permanent drop boxes. Pierce County has 3 times as many locations as King for a population under half. Spokane County partners with its local libraries. There are better options and we must do better for our democracy to grow and thrive in King County.
